Arsenal and Liverpool according to reports, have both been handed a boost in their pursuit for Schalke star Max Meyer, with Spanish outlet Mundo Deportivo via the Daily Mirror claiming that Barcelona have ended their interest in the attacking midfielder.
The 22-year-old’s current contract with Schalke is set to expire in the summer and the La Liga giants were thought to be among his suitors who are looking to hijack his services on a free at the end of the season.
The reports coming from Spain would serve as a boost to both Premier League side interested in Meyer’s services in the summer.
Jurgen Klopp will be looking to find a suitable replacement for departed Philippe Coutinho – who brought to an end his five years stint with Liverpool and finalise his move to Barcelona, in club-record deal – and Emre Can who appear to be leaving the Reds come this summer.
Arsenal on the hand, are considered favourites for Meyer’s signature as it appears the club could lose England international Jack Wilshere, whose contract at the Emirates Stadium is set to expire in the summer, on a free with the ex-AFC Bournemouth loanee yet to sign a contract extension with the North London club.
If you’re into wagering on Europe, and the type of person who capitalizes on bookmakers free bets, you obviously know that Arsenal are huge favourites to win the race in the signing of Meyer, with most odds backing the Gunners to sign Meyer should Wilshere joins AC Milan.
Since making his debut back in 2013 for Schalke, Meyer has registered 145 appearances for the Bundesliga side, netting 17 goals. This season, Meyer has only made 20 league appearances without finding the net.
According to reports, the Oberhausen, Germany born has already rejected a number of improved contract offers from Königsblauen and sporting director Christian Heidel recently admitted that time is running out.
Heidel told SportBild as quoted via The Evening Standard:
“If Max Meyer approaches us and says he wants to continue playing for Schalke, that’s wonderful.”
“But we can’t and won’t wait for much longer.”
Arsenal could definitely do with a new man in midfield as the likes of Granit Xhaka, Aaron Ramsey and Mohamed Elneny hasn’t been impressive for the club so far this season with the potential exit of Ramey and Wilshere, Meyer would slot in straight into the Gunners starting eleven.
