Arjen Robben, who was nicknamed the “Glass Man”, is highly regarded as one of the best footballers of his generation and he was known as one of the best wingers in his prime. Throughout his football career, he was able to play for five different clubs, including Chelsea, Real Madrid and Bayern Munich, where he made his name known in the world of football. He lifted two or more trophies in almost every club he represented, however, his career with the German club, Bayern Munich, bagged him the most of them.

Robben was born on 23 January 1984 (Age 38) in Bedum, a town of Groningen, Netherlands. He developed a football talent and was very skilful with his incredible footwork which made him a valuable player from a young age. He was scouted and signed by FC Groningen which was the regional club, and Robben developed his trademark of cutting inside from the right onto his left foot to score stunning goals.

He made his first-team debut for FC Groningen in the 1999/2000 campaign, and he bagged three goals in the league for the club. He broke into the starting lineup of the team in the 2000/01 season, and he was named the player of the year for that campaign. He played for one more season before he was sold to PSV for €3.9 before the 2002/03 season. In his first campaign for PSV, he scored 12 goals in 33 matches and was named the club’s “Co-player of the year” alongside Mateja Kezman. He helped them lift the Eredivisie title in his debut season while claiming the “Talented Player of the Year” award. He played for one more campaign and lifted the Johan Cruyff Shield before he left the Dutch club for Premier League giants Chelsea in 2004.

After joining the English club, Robben’s debut came a bit late in the season but was still an integral player for Chelsea as they won the Premier League title for the 2004/05 season having contributed seven goals. While it could be said that his time with Chelsea took his career to a new stage, he wasn’t that much available for the club as his spell with the Blues was fraught with injuries. He spent three campaigns with Chelsea and helped them lift two Premier League titles, one FA Cup, two Football League Cups, and one FA Community Shield.

On 22 August 2007, Robben moved to Santiago Bernabeu to sign for Real Madrid on a five-year deal for £24 million from Chelsea. His spell with the Spanish club only lasted two seasons, helping them win one La Liga trophy and one Supercopa de Espana title, as the arrival of Cristiano Ronaldo and Kaka threatened his role with the club. He joined Bayern Munich for €25 million from Real Madrid in the summer of 2009, and he was handed the number 10 jersey.

Bayern Munich was where he made his name known to European football, as he played a pivotal role in helping the German giants dominate the world of football for a while. In his first season for the club, he helped them lift the 2009/10 Bundesliga title and DFB-Pokal with 23 goals contributed. Fast forward to the 2012/13 season, he was once again an integral player for the German giants as he helped them lift their fifth Champions League title after defeating Borussia Dortmund in the final. He was named Man of the Match by UEFA, which eventually led to him being called “Mr Wembley”. After spending ten seasons with Bayern Munich, Robben announced his retirement from football on 4 July 2019.

He announced his return to football after signing a contract with his hometown club FC Groningen, in a bid to help the club recover from Covid-19 setbacks. He played for a year, before announcing his retirement from professional football, and this time he was done for good. Throughout his professional football career for clubs, Robben was able to amass a total of 209 goals and 166 assists in 614 appearances for the five clubs he played for.

Arjen Robben stands 5 ft 10 in (1.8m) tall during his football career. In his first season with FC Groningen, he was handed a number 14 jersey before it was switched to 11 in his second season with them, and he went on to put the same number on for PSV Eindhoven for his two campaigns with the Dutch club. In his three seasons with Chelsea, he wore the number 16 jersey before leaving for Real Madrid where he dubbed the number 11 jersey once again. Following that, he joined Bayern Munich and all he wore was the number 10 jersey till he retired from professional football. It was the same when he joined FC Groningen once again for his last season.

For Netherlands senior team, he wore seven different jersey numbers; 14, 13, 12, 19, 18, 21 and 11.
