Celtic will battle with Scottish rivals Rangers for the signing of AFC Bournemouth star Jermain Defoe, according to reports from the Scotsman.
Defoe is reportedly free to leave the Vitality Stadium in the January window after being limited to just four appearances this season.
With likes of Callum Wilson and Josh King in serious form, chances for starting upfront for the England international are few and far between with an exit from the South Coast imminent.
As reported by the Scotsman Brendan Rodgers will battle his former student in Steven Gerrard for the Englishman’s signature.
Tied on 42 points at the top of the table – with Celtic having a game in hand over their Old Firm rivals – the battle for the title is as close as it has ever been.
Despite Celtic losing Moussa Dembele in the summer, it seems the Glasgow based side are not short on goals with both Odsonne Edouard and James Forrest scoring 10 or more this season so far.
However, with a reported £100,000 a week contract at Bournemouth the former Tottenham and Sunderland man will surely have to take a significant pay-cut to join Celtic.
In his latest press conference as cited by Talksport Cherries Boss Eddie Howe said:
“He is someone we hold in such high regard and has done such a great job here in many different ways.
“The difficulty for me is I’ve got Joshua King, Callum Wilson and Lys, who was outstanding the other day. I have quality players vying for those positions and that’s what I want.”
