The Celtic squad has a number of areas they may have to strengthen this summer, with the club’s main concern believed to be in the defence.
The Scottish champions team lack a quality centre-back while there is not really a senior back-up option to Kieran Tierney at the left-back position.
However it would mean that the Bhoys would have to match their record transfer spend to snap up the 42-times DR Congo international, even though he has been somewhat of a fringe player at Newcastle this season.
According to the Newcastle Chronicle, the tabloid claimed the Bhoys are joined by the likes of Anderlecht and Standard Liege in the race to sign the 23-year-old with the player himself believed to be valued at £6million by Newcastle.
Mbemba, as the capability to operate both on at the left-back and centre-back positions, so his signing could solve the club’s big problem in just one move.
The DR Congo international was formerly an high-figure at defence with Anderlecht before joining Newcastle in 2015 and would certainly be a solid acquisition for Brendan Rodgers.
Mbemba’s defensive powerhouse versatility and ability on the left-wing of a back three would see Tierney operating playing at a wing-back role would really help Rodgers to unshackle the Scotland international to let him wreak havoc on opponents.
It may be tough to sign the player over the interested Belgian clubs, but Mbemba would be a really solid addition this summer if Celtic would want to splash the cash.
