BT Sport pundit and former Celtic player Chris Sutton has slammed Mikael Lustig for a poor performance for Celtic last season, claiming that the right-back made way too many errors over the course of the season.
The 31-year-old defender was ever-present for the Scottish champions as they secured domestic treble in a row, registering 47 appearances across all competition while netting three goals in the process.
However, Lustig attracted widespread criticism for his below-par performances, and the former Hoops player believes that he needs to improve his performance because Brendan Rodgers may be working on a replacement for him in the summer transfer window.
Sutton said on the Daily Record website:
“At one end of the scale, you have Mikael Lustig. He’s been a brilliant servant to the club, but there are signs he is creaking. He made far too many mistakes and lost his consistency. That’s not good for a right back and, with a new one surely going to be signed, the Swede needs to up his game.”Loading...
“At the other, Jack Hendry is just starting out in his Celtic career and he has to grasp the nettle. I’d forgive him the first five months after signing from Dundee.”
Celtic could really do with strengthening their defence this summer. The player could get sold while the rest of the player would remain at the club if he manages to bring in a new right-back, left-back and maybe a couple of centre-backs. Lustig position in the squad has been the club’ weak point in the team and has been found out in big games over the last year, especially in Europe with poor displays against the likes of Paris Saint-Germain and Bayern Munich.
The Sweden international’s form has not been that good in recent seasons and while he is a cult hero at Celtic, that won’t stop the club selling him this summer. Rodgers would likely sanctioning move for some serious competition for the player because with Cristian Gamboa down the pecking order, Lustig has got too comfortable playing in his role. There are some decent right-backs that could be available this summer, so Rodgers has to try and look for one who is as good as, if not better, than Lustig.
