Atletico Madrid’s Fernando Torres has revealed his intention on leaving Atletico Madrid this summer – and two of Britain sides have already been tipped favourite to sign the Spain international.
Having won everything (Champions League, Europa League, World Cup and European Championships) football has got to offer during his glittering playing days so far, one could understand why at 34, Torres isn’t considering retiring yet, but he’s confirmed he will play on beyond this summer, despite his exit from his boyhood club.
The 34-year-old might not be the same striker that Liverpool fans remember anymore, but he still has something to offer prospective employers.
And the stats compilers at Oddschecker reckon both Newcastle and Celtic are two clubs who could be in running for his signature.
Given his previous work with Rafa Benitez, a swansong on Tyneside doesn’t seem too far fetched, and Torres will almost certainly be aware of Brendan Rodgers given their respective backgrounds with Chelsea and Liverpool.
At this point, bookies reckon St. James’s Park is the far more likely destination at 6/1, whilst Celtic are available at a more attractive 25/1.
