Arsenal confirm they have made another signing of this summer, with Borussia Dortmund defender Sokratis Papastathopoulos making the move to Arsenal. The defender will Arsenal’s third signing of the summer, joining Stephan Lichtsteiner who signed from Juventus and Bernd Leno who signed from Bayer Leverkusen. And according to reports, Sokratis will wear the Gunners No. 5 shirt next season.
Papastathopoulos registered 198 appearances in all competitions for Dortmund since joining the Bundesliga club from Werder Bremen in 2013. His arrival will bring some much-needed experience to the Gunners’ backline, after Per Mertesacker deciding to hung his boots to become the new Head of Academy. Laurent Koscielny is struggling with a chronic achilles injury, so it’s unknown whether or not the defender will make his return in the first-half of the season.
The Gunners new boss Unai Emery isn’t short on other defensive options – Shkodran Mustafi, Calum Chambers, Rob Holding, Konstantinos Mavropanos – but looks like he is when it comes to such huge experience Papastathopoulos will bring to the team. The Greek has won major honours in both Italy and Germany, while registering 79 appearances for Greece in all outings.
The North London club’s Head of Recruitment Sven Mislintat have made the club’s defence rehabilitation their top priority of the summer and he’s achieved some heights with the signings of Leno between the sticks, Lichtsteiner at right-back and Sokratis at centre-back. There could be more to follow in the coming weeks too.
Arsenal fans all over the world has taken to social media Twitter to express delights seeing the club’s announcing the signing of Sokratis.
