Forget Torreira: Fans want Emery to sign £17m Russia hero v Saudi Arabia

Arsenal already have some nice options in the ranks but fans are believed to be urging new boss Unai Emery to reignite the club’s long standing interest in CSKA Moscow central-midfielder Aleksandr Golovin after he stole the show in Russia’s World Cup opening against Saudi Arabia by creating two assists with one goals.

Golovin has in the past been strongly linked with the 22-year-old with the Premier League giants and report even claimed they were close to signing him last summer with former boss Arsene Wenger was a huge fan of the Russian midfielder ahead of their Europa League quarter final clash in March.

Golovin first showed Gooners his class in that match with a superb sumptuous free kick in a 5-1 defeat at the Emirates Stadium and was in hot form against Saudi Arabia today in Moscow.

The diminutive playmaker who is currently rated at £17 million by Transfermkt which is bound to change with impressive performance in the World Cup, created the opening goal for Yuri Gazinskiy after just 12 minutes with an inviting cross and it was his pass, albeit a slightly misdirected one, in the build-up which allowed Denis Cheryshev to double the hosts advantage.

And the little magician was at it again with 20 minutes remaining when another well flighted cross was nodded home by Artem Dzyuba. Emery has so far focused on strengthening his defence and midfield but Arsenal fans are hopeful the Spaniard may still add a touch of flair this summer after Golovin’s first half display. He ended the show with a sublime free-kick that went into the net.
