Soon after, Tottenham sold Souness to Middlesbrough for £30,000 in 1972, and this was when his net worth started growing. He represented the club for five campaigns and helped them achieve promotion to the First Division in his second season with the club by winning the Football League Second Division in 1973/74.

In 1977, Graeme Souness was signed to Liverpool for £440,000, which was a then-British record fee, alongside Kenny Dalglish and Alan Hansen, who all contributed to the team’s success in England. Souness went on to become a pivotal player for Liverpool for six and a half seasons. He won several trophies including five League titles, three European Cups and four League Cups during his stay at Anfield. He left the English club to sign for Sampdoria in Italy for a fee of £650,000, and he won the Coppa Italia in his two seasons there.
