He was a relative unknown when he made the switch to Celtic Park in 1997, but Henrik Larsson left as a club legend and is widely considered to be one of their best ever players. Scoring 242 goals in 313 appearances for the Bhoys, Larsson is third in Celtic’s overall top scorer list behind Bobby Lennox and Jimmy McGrory.
The Swedish striker was snapped up for a paltry £650,000 from Dutch side Feyenoord in 1997, and quickly demonstrated what he is all about with his variety of brilliant goals and eye-catching performances. Larsson was regarded as one of the best players in Europe during his heyday, so let’s take a look back at some of his best strikes for Celtic.
Celtic 6-2 Rangers Scottish Premier League 2000
You can watch this goal over and over and it still gets better each time. Celtic were on their way to dishing out one of the biggest defeats on their bitter rivals as Larsson got in on the act. 3-1 to the good, a Chris Sutton knock-down saw Larsson burst through on the Rangers goal before he nut-megged the last man and sent a delicate chip over the head of Stefan Klos and into the Rangers goal.
Boavista 0-1 Celtic UEFA Cup semi-final 2003
After the first-leg ended in a 1-1 draw at Celtic Park, Larsson put the Bhoys into their first European cup final for 33 years after scoring the game’s only goal in the return leg. Naturally, it was a very cagey affair and with the game ebbing towards a goalless draw, Larsson popped up to score the winner. A neat exchange with John Hartson saw Larsson break free into the penalty area before firing home beyond the goalkeeper, sending the Green and White army supporters into pandemonium.
Porto 3-2 Celtic UEFA Cup Final 2003
Despite scoring a brace in the final against Porto, Larsson ended up on the losing side but his efforts didn’t go unnoticed. Celtic twice went behind and twice drew level but it was the Swede’s first goal that highlighted his class. A deep cross saw Larsson pull away from his marker and send a looping header across Vitor Baia’s goal. A truly brilliant goal and if any Bhoys’ fans out there think another European final is possible, you can bet on UEFA Europa League matches on Betfair now.
Celtic 3-1 Dunfermline Scottish Cup Final 2004
Larsson’s final game in a Celtic jersey was to end on a high-note, lifting the Scottish Cup after beating Dunfermline at Hampden Park. The 32-year-old scored twice in the final and it’s hard to pinpoint which goal was best, with both goals worthy of winning any cup final. His first saw him finish with aplomb into the right-hand corner, after a defensive mistake let him in but his second goal saw him finish superbly with his weaker left foot. Alan Thompson provided the assist as Larsson spun his marker and expertly finished into the bottom corner.
Celtic 3-3 Rangers Scottish Premier League 2003
Larsson was so often the thorn in Rangers’ side, and his stunning volley in this entertaining draw further proved that. The Old Firm derbies usually provide iconic moments and none more so than Larsson’s exquisite finish here. The ball was worked out to Mohammed Sylla on the right-hand side and his cross found its way to Larsson who instinctively spun his man and rifled a volley into the top corner from his left foot. A truly brilliant finish.
