Arsenal head-coach Unai Emery has revealed Granit Xhaka will play a key role in his new-look Arsenal team after the Swiss have been offered a new long-term contract with the club.
Xhaka was signed by Arsene Wenger just over two years ago but has shown only flashes of the ability which persuaded the now former Arsenal boss to spend £35 million on him.
The Spanish boss has already identified the Gunners central midfield as an area in need of strengthening and they club are on the verge of agreeing a deal with Sampdoria for Lucas Torreira.
Despite Torreira yet to join Arsenal, Emery believes the £90,000-a-week ace will be a central part of his plans next season.
The Spaniard said:
“I’m delighted that Granit has extended his contract with us.
“He’s an important member of the squad and is still young so will be able to develop even more.
“I hope he has a successful World Cup with Switzerland and comes back fit and ready for the new season.”
Xhaka, meanwhile, sent a message to his followers in Twitter, saying:
“Hi Gunners, it’s Granit.
“I’m happy and proud to sign a new contract here for Arsenal and I hope for good results here in the future.”
The club have confirmed that Xhaka’s contract renewal is subject to the completion of regulatory processes.
