Impressive: Jorginho named Premier League best summer signing

Chelsea’s new midfielder Jorginho has been named as the best signing in the Premier League this summer, by Sky Sports pundits and former Arsenal star Paul Merson.

Jorginho, who joined Chelsea from Napoli in July, signed a five-year deal with the Blues in a deal believed to worth around up to £57m.

Jorginho, who has eight international caps for Italy, scored a penalty during The Blues’ 3-0 opening day win at Huddersfield Town this afternoon – his first goal for his new club in just his second appearance.

But before Saturday’s action at the John Smith’s Stadium even got underway, former England, Arsenal and Aston Villa midfielder Merson believes Jorginho’s move to Stamford Bridge will prove to be the shrewdest top-flight addition this summer.

The midfielder has eight international appearances for Italy. He scored his first goal for Chelsea during his debut match against Huddersfield Town that ended in Chelsea’s winning by 3-0.

But prior to their meeting with the Terriers on Saturday, Merson said, quoted via TeamTalk:

“I’m going to go with Jorginho.

“I know he wasn’t great in the [FA] Community Shield but Pep Guardiola wanted to buy him and that tells you everything.

“The lad can play and £50m in this day and age is a cup of tea, if I’m honest.

“It might be obvious or it might be not, but when he gets used to it he’s a very special footballer.

“He’s tidy, he can pass the ball, he breaks things up.”

Merson added:

“The problem is, just like Alberto Aquilani when he was at Liverpool – and given how highly rated he was at Roma – is getting used to the different pace of the game over here compared to Italy.”

Over his four years stint with Napoli, the midfielder netted six goals in 160 appearances in all outings, whilst winning the Coppa Italian and the Supercoppa Italiana.
