JUST IN: Arsenal agrees to match release clause of Premier League defender Beats Chelsea and Utd to it

English giant Arsenal are reported to be among the top clubs in the race to sign Belgian defender Toby Alderweireld from their direct Premier League rivals Tottenham Hotspur ahead of the summer transfer window.

Spurs were very keen on keeping the defender at the White Hart Lane but the club have failed to reach an agreement on their offer of a contract extension, which prompts them to activate a 12-month extension in the Belgian’s contract clause.

Alderweireld will continue to put on the Spurs jersey with his insane defending skill till the summer of 2020 when he will be available on a free transfer in the market.

His current contract with the North London club is reported to have a release clause of £25m and could still be leaving the club in the summer.

European clubs are reported to have been preparing an offer for the Belgium international due to the price tag on his release clause and according to report from The Sun, Arsenal is reported to be leading the race for the signature of the prolific defender.

Two Manchester clubs and Chelsea have also been reported to be interested in the Belgian defender in the last 12 months.

Since joining the Mauricio Pochettino’s side in the summer of 2015 from Atletico Madrid, Toby Alderweireld has over the years become a key player for the club.
