Landon Donovan is an American retired professional soccer player. Playing as a winger and also, occasionally, as a centre forward. His name in the footballing world is widely known in the United States, he is highly regarded as one of their greatest Soccer players of all time in the men’s team. Despite enjoying spells in Europe for a while, having played for German side Bayer Leverkusen, Bayern Munich and English side Everton, most of his trophies were lifted in his homeland and his individual ones too, holding the record for the highest assist provider of all-time in the U.S. He is currently the Head Coach of San Diego Loyal SC in the USL Championship.

Along with his twin sister, Donovan was given birth to on March 4, 1982, to Donna Kenney-Cash and Tim Donovan with one being an American special education teacher and the other being a semi-professional Ice Hockey player. They are both Irish descents. With his siblings, Donovan attended the Redlands East Valley High School in Redlands, California, where he spent most of his childhood. After developing an interest in Soccer at the age of six, his mother allowed him to join up an “organized league”, where he bagged seven goals in his debut match.  

Recognizing his talent, he was given an entry to the U.S. Youth Soccer’s Olympic Development, a program used to brew future American youngsters, in 1997. At 16 years of age, he represented the U.S U-17 national team at the 1999 FIFA U-17 World Championship, where he scored 35 goals in 41 games and ended up going home as the tournament’s best player after winning the Golden Ball.  

Having been spotted by Bayer Leverkusen sporting director Michael Reschke in a youth European tournament, he signed a six-year contract with the German club. Shortly after signing, Donovan was then loan to Major League Soccer’s side San Jose Earthquakes for the 2001 campaign. He quickly rose to prominence in the MLS as he was able to lead the Earthquakes to lift two MLS Cup Championships in 2001 and 2003. in his four seasons spent with the club, he was able to bag 33 goals and further providing 29 assists. This resulted in him being named U.S. Soccer Athlete of the Year three years in a row being the first player ever to do so.

He returned to Bayer Leverkusen in 2005 decided to leave the German club claiming he wants to return to his homeland. He ended signing for LA Galaxy instead of rejoining the Earthquakes due to some complicated issues. In his first campaign with the club, he found the back of the net 12 times and providing 100 assists helping the club win the MLS Cup. That same season, he was named in the MLS All-time Best Eleven. The American spent eleven seasons with LA Galaxy and in-between those campaigns he enjoyed loan spells to Bayern Munich and English side Everton but didn’t make much of a spark there. He ended up lifting four MLS Cups, two Supporters’ Shield and Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup in his career with the Galaxy contributing 135 goals and 101 assists in 308 appearances in all competitions for the club.  

He announced his retirement from soccer in his last season with LA Galaxy back in 2016, and just when everyone thought the American Soccer star has finally hanged his boots, he returned two years later playing for Club Leon and San Diego Sockers.  

International level, Donovan represented the United States scoring 57 goals and 27 assists in 157 appearances having to help them win the CONCACAF Gold Cup four times and being a runner-up for the FIFA Confederations Cup back in 2009.
