If there is an area of the Manchester City squad that needs to be strengthened, it’s in the defence. According to reports, the Premier League leaders are set to sign Aymeric Laporte to solve their defese dilemma.
As City sit top of the Premier League with 12-points ahead of second-placed Manchester United, coupled with the fact that they’ve reached the League Cup final and are still in with a shout for the quadruple with the FA Cup and Champions League, it’s difficult to pick too many holes in the current squad.
However, with Vincent Kompany continuing to face series of injuries and a lack of quality depth behind John Stones and Nicolas Otamendi, coupled with injuries to the likes of Benjamin Mendy, the backline is arguably a concern for Pep Guardiola.
According to reports garnered from Sky Sport Italia journalist Gianluca Di Marzio, it might not be a problem for much long as the Manchester giants are set to sign Laporte from Athletic Bilbao in a deal worth excess €70m in total, while the 23-year-old Frenchman will sign a five-year deal at the Etihad.
The Sky Sports journalist adds that Laporte will undergo his medical with Man City on Tuesday, with City likely to want to wrap it up as soon as possible with the transfer deadline fast approaching on Wednesday night.
To add further fuel to the matter, the report suggest that the defender’s tile at Bilbao is coming to an end, Spanish football expert Guillem Balague also commented on the situation regarding the player’s future on Friday night as he was left out of City’s side encounter with Eibar, as seen in the image below.
In turn, that has raise further doubts about his future in Spain, but the Citizen will have to move quickly to get the deal done if his medical will indeed take place just a day before the January deadline day.
