Bayer Leverkusen goalkeeper Bernd Leno is said to be having his medicals at Arsenal this afternoon ahead of a potential £19.3million ($25,024,368.00) move this summer.
The goalkeeper has been on the Gunners’ radar this summer as the club new head-coach Unai Emery consideration a long-term replacement for Petr Cech.
The goalkeeper has been with the German club since 2011 with series of impressive performances but couldn’t get on the plane with Joachim Low’s squad for the Russia World Cup this summer.
Arsenal are getting closer to the signing of the German goalkeeper and according to a German reporter, Christian Falk, a reporter with German outlet SportBild, he claimed the deal to sign the goalkeeper is imminent.
The journalist revealed on his Twitter account that the German will sign a five-year deal with the North London club and confirmed he was in London having a medicals with an announcement expected soon which will see him Emery’s second signing with Arsenal.
Leno is an impressive option between the sticks and his signing would likely see him challenge Petr Cech for the No. 1 position at Arsenal. Although, the latter is expected to join Napoli and the Serie A club are believed to be keen on his signing this summer.
Former Arsenal captain Paul Merson believes Cech is no long an option for Arsenal in goals and thinks the club needs to be considering move for a replacement.
“Defensively they need everything.
“From a goalkeeper, as Petr Cech was great but isn’t now, centre-halves and a holding midfielder.
“The full-backs aren’t really good enough either so they’ve got a lot of work to do. Arsenal need to tighten up and become hard to beat which, based on what he did at Sevilla, Emery can do.
“Emery knows the Spanish market well so I think he’ll be looking there, and to France, but I can’t see them bringing in any English players.
“The good thing is that they’ve made an appointment early so Emery has time to improve the squad and if they can get [Mesut] Ozil, [Pierre-Emerick] Aubameyang and [Alexandre] Lacazette playing well then they’re flying.”
