Mohamed Salah and Roberto Firmino may have netted 51 goals for Liverpool this season, but John Barnes has expressed his doubts about the duo goalscoring ability for the club this season.
Salah has been a sensational signing for Liverpool since his £36.9m switch from Roma back in the summer of 2016, becoming just the 13th Reds player to reach the 30-goal milestone and the first since Luis Suarez four years ago earlier this week.
Similarly, Firmino has enjoyed a stellar season at Anfield since his move to Liverpool and is just one short of the 22 goals he scored for Hoffenheim back in 2014.
However, Barnes, who was part of the Merseyside squad to won the league title in 1990, believes the latter and the Brazilian may not be as good as they are next season.
And he thinks Liverpool could do with the signing of another goalscorer to the club when the transfer window re-opens.
“They need better all-round players.
“The front-three are great, but I don’t feel that they are necessarily going to continue to do this for the next two or three years.
“Salah is not a centre forward, I don’t think he is a player who can score goals consistently over a period of time. We don’t have players like that.
“We have players like Salah and Mane and, although Mane scored a hat-trick against Porto, they are not out-and-out goalscorers.”
Sadio Mane’s hat-trick for Liverpool against Porto in midweek have taken the Senegalese goals to 12 for the season, meaning Liverpool’s front three have netted a remarkable 63 goals between them.
Firmino has been playing as a converted striker since Klopp took over in October 2015 and the Brazilian donning the NO. 9 jersey has become an integral part of how Liverpool operate under the German boss.
Barnes though feels Firmino would benefit playing from a slightly deeper role and is urging the Reds to sign a “penalty-box player.”
“So, as funny as it may seem, I think if they could get a centre forward, a penalty-box player and play Firmino slightly deeper,” he added.
“I think it will be better for the balance of the team.
“Yes, we’re scoring lots of goals but can we see Mane and Salah continuing to score this amount of goals on a regular basis?
“I think we need to get better individual players now.”
