Manchester United are set to break the world record fee for a defender in order to sign Real Madrid’s Raphael Varane but Tottenham Hotspur’s Toby Alderweireld is said to be an alternative.
The Red Devils’ boss Jose Mourinho was left frustrated in the summer with the club’s failure to provide funds to land any of his prime targets as he looked to bring in a ball-playing centre-half with speculations linking likes of Harry Maguire and Jerome Boateng to the club.
The lack of options at the back has caught the Manchester club so much as they’ve endured one of their worst run to a Premier League season having conceded 21 goals in 13 games to leave them way behind in seventh place in the table – 14 points adrift league leaders Manchester City.
The team presently have Chris Smalling and Victor Lindelof as first choice with Eric Bailly down the pecking order but Mourinho remains determined to strengthen the core of the team in January and it seems the club’s chiefs are ready to back him.
As reported by the Independent, the tabloid claims United’s executive vice-chairman Ed Woodward is prepared to break the world record for a defender in order to sign their “dream” target Varane from Real Madrid but that will be determine whether the Los Blancos are ready to sell or not.
Obviously the four-time Champions League winer would be a superb addition if United were able to pull it off but they acknowledge a deal will be extremely difficult so the Independent claims the Red Devils have drawn up a list of alternative targets.
The newspaper says Alderweireld remains on United’s radar and although Woodward was reluctant to meet Tottenham’s asking price in the summer, the United supremo could be more tempted given that the 29-year-old will have a £25m buy out clause next summer.
