Paul Gascoigne was born on 27 May 1967 in Gateshead, County Durham to John, who was a hod carrier, and Carol, who worked in the factory. His name “Paul John Gascoigne”, was in tribute to Paul McCartney and John Lennon of the Beatles. Growing up, Paul went to Breckenbeds Junior High School, and then Heathfield Senior High School, which were both located in the Low Fell area of Gateshead. After failing to impress in trials at Ipswich Town, Middlesbrough and Southampton, he was signed as a schoolboy to Newcastle United in 1980. This was where Paul Gascoigne’s net worth began its rise.

His first team debut happened as a substitute in a 1-0 victory against Queens Park Rangers on 13 April 1985. He went on to impress the manager, which led to him signing a new contract with Newcastle United with a two-year option clause. In 1988, Newcastle’s Jackie Milburn claimed that Gascoigne was the “best player in the world” on the BBC programme Football Focus. In the same year, he was named the PFA Young Player of the Year and was named the PFA Team of the Year.

However, he had to leave Newcastle United as the club became quite unstable due to the financial crisis. He was signed by Tottenham Hotspur for a then-British record fee of £2.2 million. Gascoigne only spent three seasons with the Spurs in the First Division winning one FA Cup with them before being sold to Serie A’s Lazio for £5.5 million. He played for the Italian club for three campaigns as well before moving to Scotland to join Rangers. He won four trophies with the Scottish club, including two Scottish Premier Division titles. He also played for Middlesbrough, Everton, Burnley, Gansu Tianma (Chinese League One), and Boston United, where he finally hung his football boots for retirement in 2004.
