Tottenham Hotspur are planning to spend £65 million on Alfie Mawson and Ryan Bertrand this summer, according to the Daily Express. The North London club face a fight to keep several defensive players this season, including Danny Rose and Toby Alderwiereld who is said to be joining Manchester United, Arsenal or Chelsea this summer.
Mauricio Pochettino is on the lookout for replacements and has shortlisted Mawson and Bertrand as potential candidates to fill the holes in his defence, if they do suffer player departures.
Swansea’s Mawson has enjoyed a stellar season after he joined the Swans from Barnsley for a reported £5 million in 2016, and despite the Welsh club threatened by relegation, he’s been vital in their hopes to escape relegation which has contributed to his £40 million valuation.
Bertrand is another relegation-threatened defender who has also attracted attention from Pochettino after a consistent season which has seen him registered an assist and four goals for Southampton in the Premier League.
It’s reported the Saints would want about £25 million for the defender after he signed a recent five-year deal worth £80,000 a week in 2016. The England international has won the Champions League and Europa League before while at Chelsea, and his European experience would no doubt be of use to Spurs as they attempt to continually improve.
