Former Manchester United defender now turned pundit Rio Ferdinand believes that Jurgen Klopp’s priority in the summer for Liverpool should be strengthening his Liverpool defence.
The Reds have been earning plenty of praise for their impressive attacking performances this season under the German boss, but there are still significant doubts about their defensive solidity.
Liverpool took a giant stride towards the Champions League quarter-finals on Wednesday night when they won a dominant 5-0 victory over Porto in the last 16 first leg.
But for all Liverpool’s impressive attacking play, the ex-Manchester United star Ferdinand still feels that the Reds are susceptible at the back.
Speaking to BT Sport on Wednesday night, Ferdinand said:
“That will be one of the top things on Klopp’s list [strengthening the defence].
“He’s got a fantastic attacking team there and it’s all about getting that balance right, defensively and attacking-wise.
“When you look at the front players they’ve got, Firmino, Salah, Mane – great players. These boys can beat anyone on their day.”
The Reds are currently in third place in the Premier League table as they chase Champions League qualification for the second season running under the German boss.
Liverpool will not return to Premier League action until 24 Ferbuary, when the club host West Ham United at Anfield in the top flight.
They are will also take on FC Porot in the return leg of their Champions League clash on 6 March at Anfield. They are still searching for their first trophy since Klopp’s appointment at Anfield as Brendan Rodgers’ permanent successor back in 2015.
