Having developed talent for football, Van Persie joined the youth squad of hometown club SBV Excelsior at the age of five but later moved to Feyenoord at 16. He made his first-team debut for Feyenoord at 17 in the 2001/02 season, and he went on to be the start for the Dutch club in the final of the UEFA Cup. This led to him being awarded the KNVB Best Young Talent award.
He spent three campaigns with the Dutch club, due to a rift between him and the then-manager at the time, before moving to England to sign for Arsenal for £2.75 million. His debut season with Arsenal wasn’t all that amazing as he was mostly seen on the bench, but he still managed to win a trophy in the form of the FA Community Shield. While his time with the North London club could be said to be fraught with injuries, he was still able to lead the English club to victories in so many games. He went on to spend eight seasons with Arsenal, helping them win one FA Cup and one FA Community Shield by contributing 132 goals in 278 games in all competitions for the club.
Robin van Persie joined Manchester United for an initial fee of £22.5 million, and he went on to help the club win the Premier League title in his 2012/13 season (his debut season for United) after contributing 26 league goals in 28 games. He stayed with the Manchester club for three seasons and scored 58 goals in 105 games in all competitions. He then moved to Turkey to join Fenerhahce for three campaigns before returning to his roots to play for Feyenoord once more. He retired from professional football in 2019.
