Steve McManaman is a retired English footballer that was regarded as one of the most successful English players in modern football. Playing as a winger, the English player only represented three football clubs throughout his prolific career; Liverpool, Real Madrid and Manchester City. Steven McManaman was birthed on 11th February 1972 in Bootle, Liverpool. In 1988, McManaman bagged a two-year apprenticeship contract with Liverpool, and he was mentored by John Barnes, who he was being groomed to replace at the time. Having found him to be quite talented, the Reds’ then-manager Kenny Dalglish gave McManaman his debut in a Football League First Division game against Sheffield United, coming on as a substitute. He made his full debut the following campaign in a 2-1 victory against Oldham Athletic, a game in which he bagged his first assist by creating a chance for Barnes to score a late winner. Steven McManaman quickly became a regular first team at the age of 19 during the 1991/92 campaign, and he ended up making 51 appearances for the team. He was described as the most promising star in his first full season with Liverpool by Ian Rush.

He rose to fame with Merseyside club, and McManaman was regarded as one of the two best rising young wingers at the time, alongside Ryan Giggs. In the 1994/95 campaign, he scored twice in a League Cup final against Bolton Wanderers to claim a 2-1 victory. That match was later named “The McManaman Final”. McManaman was a beast in the midfield for Liverpool as well as in the attack. He was so good in the Premier League that managers had to deploy man-markers to follow him for an entire game, he even made Sir Alex Ferguson sweat. He won the Man of the Match awards consistently from 1996 to 1998. Having signed a pre-contract deal with Real Madrid in his final season with Liverpool, the moved to Santiago Bernabeu on the 1st of July, 1999. His move to Spain made him the second English player to ever play for the Los Blancos after Laurie Cunningham in the 1980s. He is also the first-ever Premier League player to play for Real Madrid. McManaman found instant success with the Los Blancos as he provided an assist in his debut match for Real Madrid in a 2-1 victory against Mallorca. His performance was great with the Spanish club and he was even nicknamed “El Cartero” by the fans for his unpredictability in his deliveries. In 2004, McManaman returned to the Premier League where he signed for Manchester City to play with Kevin Keegan, and reunite with Robbie Fowler, David James, and Nicolas Anelka. However, his time with Manchester City wasn’t all that good and he only spent two campaigns with the club before he was released on a free transfer. Shortly after, he retired from football.
