Steven McManaman was birthed on 11th February 1972 in Bootle, Liverpool. In 1988, McManaman bagged a two-year apprenticeship contract with Liverpool, and he was mentored by John Barnes, who he was being groomed to replace at the time. Having found him to be quite talented, the Reds’ then-manager Kenny Dalglish gave McManaman his debut in a Football League First Division game against Sheffield United, coming on as a substitute. He made his full debut the following campaign in a 2-1 victory against Oldham Athletic, a game in which he bagged his first assist by creating a chance for Barnes to score a late winner.
