Liverpool legend Steven Gerrard appeared to confirm Emre Can’s imminent departure from club in a slip of the tongue during BT Sport’s coverage of Liverpool’s 5-0 win at Porto on Wednesday night.
The Germany international’s future has been a source of relentless debate over the past few months given the former Southampton star is set to become a free agent in the summer.
Can has been linked with a potential summer move to Juventus despite his progress with the club so far. Can has refused to shed light on his long-term plans, while Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp has remained tight-lipped about the player’s future.
From report, Liverpool have already agreed a £48m deal with RB Leipzig to sign Guinean midfielder Naby Keita at the end of the 2017-18 season.
Ex-Liverpool captain Gerrard appeared to confirm that the Germany international will leave the club at the end of the season when asked about his options in the middle of the park.
Gerrard told BT Sport:
“We’ll have to wait and see what happens.”
“Emre Can is leaving and Keita is coming in, but Keita is a number eight – a dribbler and a runner. You can accommodate a Henderson and a Keita [in the same team].”
Liverpool were 5-0 winners against Porto in the first leg of their Champions league last-16 clash on Wednesday night.
The Reds are in third place in the Premier League table and two points below Manchester United. Liverpool return to Premier League action at home against West Ham United and would be looking to earn all three points against the Hammers.
